The long awaited and much anticipated new Gov't Mule studio record Deja Voodoo was released on September 14th, 2004. This album, the first to include keyboardist Danny Louis and bassist Andy Hess along with founding members Warren Haynes and Matt Abts, is comprised completely of songs which had never been performed live. When asked to describe the album, Haynes says "It sounds like Gov't Mule, but it doesn't't sound like anything we've already done. It has the same muscle and the same influences and character. Volume 2 features guitarist Warren Haynes and drummer Matt Abts with 12 more of the world's greatest bass players, including Les Claypool (Primus), Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead), Rocco Prestia, Alphonso Johnson, Jack Casady, Chris Squire, Dave Schools (Widespread Panic), Tony Levin, Billy Cox, George Porter Jr (The Meters), and Me'Shell Ndegeocello. Gov't Mule's Mighty High features reggae and dub versions of classic Mule covers and originals. Clocking in at nearly 70 minutes, Mighty High was produced by Warren Haynes and Gordie Johnson and mixed by Johnson. Gov’t Mule’s first release on ATO Records, The Deep End Volume 1, is the first of a three-part series (Volume 2 & the Mike Gordon directed documentary On The Banks, now called Rising Low) that features 25 of the world's premiere bass players. Volume 1 features singer/guitarist Warren Haynes and drummer Matt Abts with a different guest bass player on each of the 13 songs, including Bootsy Collins (P-Funk, James Brown), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), John Entwistle (The Who), Stefan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band) and Les Claypool (Primus). Volume 1 also includes performances by Gregg Allman, Rob Barraco, Randall Bramblett, Jerry Cantrell, Audley Freed, Eddie Harsch, Chuck Leavell, Danny Louis, Paige McConnell, Little Milton, John Scofield, Derek Trucks and Bernie Worrell.
