In late September of 1999, John Scofield teamed with Gov't Mule, then featuring original bass player the late Allen Woody, in Georgia for two legendary shows. These shows were recorded with the intention of it being a live release after the studio album Life before Insanity. After the passing of Woody, and the start of The Deep End project, those plans had been set aside. There are no audience recordings from these shows, so this will be the first time that anyone will be able to hear or relive what took place that night.

The Mule with Scofield. What a pairing. Great playing. The way that Warren and John work together is wonderful. They give each other space to create. The jamming is off the charts. I am glad I purchased this great music.

This is Simply what 2 of the best guitarists can do with a great band like the Mule behind them. Absolutely as sick as the original

Who doesn't love Govt Mule? Nobody who's heard them, I dare say. I pity the souls who see the Mule as only a hard rock band. They are, in fact, an "anything they want to be" band. One of the joys of a Mule concert is the guarantee of at least one or two surprises in the set lists. Who doesn't love mega-guitarist John Scofield? Fans of Miles Davis first heard him back in the '80s on Star People, Decoy, and You're Under Arrest. Sco also played on albums by Chet Baker, Billy Cobham, Joe Henderson, Charles Mingus and numerous other jazz notables. He also play with Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. Sco is so much more than "just a jazz guitarist". And the proof is here. When I first heard him on Govt. Mule's Deep End Vol. 2, I was blown away. I wanted to hear more of this configuration. And more was on the way. Dr. Dan Matrazzo came aboard on keyboards. I was impressed with his work with Col. Bruce Hampton and the Fiji Mariners. I knew he'd be a great fit. And he was. When he and Sco appeared at 2013's Christmas Jam, we were treated to such a fine set that we dared to wish for more. Over a decade passed since their first shows. Finally Sco-Mule the album was released and It was worth the wait. Not only did we get some great tunes by Sco and Govt. Mule, like Hottentot and Kind of Bird, we also were treated to fantastic extended covers of Spanish Moon and Freeway Jam. Special guest guitarists Jimmy Herring and Fred Barnes added even more dazzle and flair. Could we possibly ask for more? Yes, soon after the release of Sco-Mule they hit the road for an incredible spring tour. What more could we possibly want? How about Island Exodus for another run of my new favorite band? That dream will come true for a few lucky souls.

sco-mule was worth the wait! the group is at it's peak, and the help of friends along the way, make it even better.mixed feelings were explained by warren in the linear notes, obviously with Allen's passing, made it hard to deal with then, but time has been good, and this release is simply rockin and funky and a must for anyone's music collection!!!! thanks for this I love it, just buy it girls and boys!!!!!

Fantastic release. One of the best CD packages you ever put out. I am a huge jazz fan and hearing the Mule expand their normal playing to incorporate jazz elementsis beautiful to hear. Can't recommend this enough.

As always, Warren & the Mule never disappoint! I remember the early days of the Mule when the band would walk thru the crowd asking if everything sounded good and if you were enjoying yourself during set breaks. This is one of the greatest bands of all times! I will follow them to the end!
