Due to renovation, the annual Mule year's eve show took place at TheHammerstein Ballroom instead of The Beacon Theatre. Set 1 got underway with Wandering Child and a danceable Slackjaw Jezebel. After Thelonius Beck, Temporary Saint and and Birth Of The Mule opened the door to About To Rage. SG in hand, Warren slid his way into Brighter Days and then announced the last Thorazine Shuffle of 2008.
Set 2 ("The Seattle Set") and played in its entirety with the help of Pete Thorn began with an unbelievable rendition of Rooster followed by the maiden voyage of Say Hello To Heaven. Pearl Jam's Black came next before making way for a beautiful telling of Nothingman. After Indifference, Fell On Black Days and Black Hole Sun both set the crowdablaze. Where Did You Sleep rolled into Auld Lang Syne as Warren and crowd alike counted in the New Year. To the popping of myriad balloons and the tossing of much confetti, 2009 began with a face melting version of Nirvana's About A Girl which was followed by Lithium and then Hunger Strike.
Set 3 fired up on all cylinders with a Danny Louis-less War Pigs that was beyond extraordinary. At Danny's return , the ferocious four launched into Afro-Blue and then two red hot tunes, Bad Little Doggie and Brand New Angel. Pete Thorn returned to the deck and brought along Kevin Kinney. This sextet launched into Drivin'N'Cryin's Straight To Hell which segued into Rockin' In The Free World to end an amazing set. As an encore, the Mule+2 returned and belted out a dizzying Can't You See.

Having come off two acoustic nights in SOHO, the band opened this first of two shows at the Hammerstein with a loud, in your face Blind Man In The Dark. Lola Leave Your Light On and Gameface were both monstrous and set the stage nicely for Towering Fool. She Said, She Said again dove headlong into Tomorrow Never Knows, much to everyone's delight. The addition of Ivan Neville and Marc Quinones signalled the start of a funky Spanish Moon. Marc stayed aboard for the rest of the set and added his flavor to the Mule stew for Into The Mystic and Kind Of Bird. Set two of the first night began with Like Flies which was followed by I Think You Know What I Mean which flowed into When The Levee Breaks. Time To Confess was followed by Freddie Hubbard's Red Clay, which was delivered with the able assistance of Jimmy Vivino, Marc Quinones and Jeff Young. Matt and Marc then pounded out Drums before the return of the band and I'm A Ram. Mule was chosen to close the set, but Jimmy Vivino and Jeff Young both returned for the night's encore which was Come On Into My Kitchen (intro) into 32/20 Blues.

Just as the previous night, Warren opened the show with solo performances, this time Love's Open Door and The Real Thing were the chosen two. Matt then joined in the fun with Warren for In My Life. With Jorgen and Danny now on stage as well, the band launched into Dolphineus with surreptitiously segued into Painted Silver Light. To the cheers of many, Beatifully Broken followed, and was itself followed by Patchwork Quilt. Wild Horses and One made for a stunning duo of cover songs and Long Distance Call featured an ad lib verse sung by Warren that displayed the quick mind and talented voice that he possesses. The 12 string came out for So Weak, So Strong but the band flew away from the set with a dazzling Kind Of Bird.

There is little that need be said about the second set's opener. Just listen. John The Revelator intertwined with When The Levee Breaks. 'Nuff said. Cahenge id Gonna Come followed and Fallen Down->The Other One Jam followed that. Nirvana's All Apologies made it's debut on the Mule stage to the delight of all and Endless Parade led into a sing-a-long during Hide Your Love Away. The set ended in classic Mule form with Soulshine. The night's encore began with Warren by himself telling the history of Hallelujah Blvd, which he then played to many a moistened eye. To end the night, and the "acoustic" run, the whole band ripped out a rendition of Goin' Out West that toes tappin' on the New York sidewalks.

12.27.08 Angel Orensanz Temple Not seen in man moons, the full band acoustic came to pass again, this time in the oldest synagogue in New York, the Angel Orensanz Center, which was named after the famous Basque artist and sculptor who hd his studio there. The evening began with Warren by himself performing Glory Road and Affair On 8th Ave. Danny then came aboard and the two of them delivered a memorable Broken Promised Land. The full band then started in with Get Behind The Mule and a riveting Raven Black Night. I'll Be The One featured a tease of Blue Sky and Afro-Blue was a great lead-in to Bus Stop. The set ended with a first time showing of Nirvana's About A Girl that left the crowd speechless.

Warren and Danny started the second set with a glorious telling of Hallelujah. They were then joined by Matt and Jorgen for The Shape I'm In. The blues came to the temple in the form of I Belive To My Soul and It Hurts Me Too. Matt took the helm with Drums that led into Child Of The Earth and a stunning Sugaree. Thorazine Shuffle rounded out the set, but Warren responded to the cheers and returned to the stage to deliver a solo performance of Forevermore. Again, due to hearty applause, the full Mule came on stage and proffered a first timer, Where Did You Sleep to end the night.

Voodoo Lounge

The sixth of six shows in a row put us in Kansas City, MO at The Voodoo Lounge. Slackjaw Jezebel and Bad Man Walking announced the band's arrival with the sound of rock. Smokestack Lightning was sandwiched by Lay Your Burden Down, but the return of Fearless from the Mule-O-Ween set was an instant crowd pleaser. Don't Step On The Grass Sam and Rocking Horse and Time To Confess were old school Mule favorites executed perfectly. The set closer was an astounding Born Under A Bad Sign with Davy Knowles. King's Highway and A Million Miles From Yesterday led off set two and Kind Of Bird was prefaced this time with Birth Of The Bird as an intro. Mr. Big was huge and rocked into Drums, but larger still may have been I Think You Know What I Mean-> When The Levee Breaks-> I Think You Know What I Mean. That's Why I'm Here was then proffered and the intro to Soulshine came as it's last notes were ringing out. The return of Davy Knowles to the stage with the band raised the expectations of the crowd, and rightfully so. This Ramblin' Gamblin' Man is pure Gov't Mule bliss.

After such a raucous and rockin' first night, the Pantages Theatre was all a twitter with talk of what would be in store for tonight's showing. Streamline Woman laid to rest any fear that he band had spent all they had last night as did Lola Leave Your Light On. Hot on the heels of Bad Little Doggoe came a version of How Many More Years that almost brought the walls in. The end of the set was just as ridiculous when Sco-Mule surrounded Sly Stone's Dance To The Music; Hunger Strike mated with Dear Mr. Fantasy; and Davy Knowles came onboard for Take Me To the River. Starting off slow with No Celebration was only a tease. Danny came out front with guitar in hand for Trying Not To Fall and then Helter Skelter. Jorgen then played Sabbatage, a Black Sabbath inspired bass solo that segued into Matt singing on Have A Cigar. Matt then delivered on Drums and was joined by Jorgen for Fullt Blas. It's Swedish. Brighter Days led into like flies and Blind Man closed this extraordinary set. Oh wait, Patterson Hood of the Drive By Truckers came from his own gig next door to sit in for the night's encore: Cortez The Killer. Thank You and Goodnight!!!
